πUS will meet China in London to discuss AI
UK's upcoming AI Safety summit is a pivotal moment
Hey there, Surfersπ!
Big stuff coming up next week! The US is dropping some executive orders on AI, Microsoft's mixing AI into Microsoft 365, and the UK's throwing an AI Safety summit. It could be huge, or, you know, just another blip on the radar.
Hereβs your two minutes of AI news for the day:
ONE PIECE OF NEWS
πUS will meet China in London to discuss AI
Alright, here's the deal on the AI scene. We're stepping into the AI era, full of fancy robots and virtual assistants, with all their promises and risks. Big players like the US, the EU, and China are on their toes, trying to set rules for AI at their own backyards. But many believe we need a global playbook, similar to what we have for nuclear weapons, to ensure AI doesn't get out of hand.
Now, onto the main event: London's prepping for the AI Safety Summit next Wednesday. The UK government recently released a report with some eyebrow-raising predictions about AI's potential risks, including the stuff of sci-fi nightmares.
However, there's a growing voice saying, "Before we dive deep into future threats, shouldn't we address today's challenges, like AI biases and job concerns?"
The drama: While the UK's trying to hype up the summit, some big names are missing from the RSVP list, like Biden and most European leaders. It's got people wondering about the global weight of this event. The US, while sending VP Kamala Harris, has its own plans with an expected executive order on AI next week.
However tech giants like Google DeepMind and OpenAI are in and China accepted the invitation this week. Given the past drama between the US and China on AI topics, all eyes are on London. Can London be the place where these two superpowers find common ground on AI?
And amidst all this, there's a burning question: Who takes the lead in setting AI standards?
The UK is keen on launching an AI Safety Institute, aiming to have access to the technology behind the largest AI players like OpenAI and Google for oversight. But this might raise a few eyebrows in the US.
Meanwhile, the UN has just announced its own advisory body on AI governance, and the G7 is also in the mix. With so many cooks in the kitchen, will they work in harmony or step on each other's toes?
The summit holds promise, and many are hopeful that heavyweights like the US and China can find some common ground. But given the history, predicting the outcome? That's a tough call.
