πŸ„Humane’s $699 AI Pin

Can it replace smartphones?

THE NEWS

πŸ“ŸHumane introduced its wearable AI pin

Close your eyes and imagine a world without smartphones. Just a small device telling you anything you want to know. Wild, right?

This is exactly what Humane, a small Silicon Valley company, envisions with its newly introduced AI Pin. Their dream? A future less glued to screens.

The AI Pin is basically a mini-computer that plays fashion accessory, clipping onto your clothes with a magnetic battery. It's got the usual smartphone jazz - taking photos and videos, shooting texts - but here's the kicker: no screen. Need to see something? Bam, it lasers a display right onto your palm. Very sci-fi.

But the real interesting part is the chatty AI assistant built in. They showed off some neat tricks like, "Hey, translate between us" (a tad slow for real life conversations), "What's the calorie count of this handful of almonds?" and "Find that address my friend texted me last month."

It’s essentially a supersmart sidekick that you can summon anytime.

Now, Humane's not just slapping apps onto this thing. They're thinking bigger. It's like having an AI butler who summons whatever digital tool you need on the fly.

BUT – and it's a big 'but' – can we really trust AI to run the show? can we really trust AI to run the show? AIs are still learning to not make stuff up. During the demo, the AI Pin got a solar eclipse date right but goofed up the location. Will it be able to choose the right tools and can I trust the results?

While OpenAI is taking a page out of Apple’s playbook, opening up its tools for others to build on and get creative with, Humane is playing it differently. Their gadget picks the apps or AIs for you, which isn't exactly a big invite for developers to join the party.

Also, let's talk voice control. Remember Google Glass? Yeah, didn't take long for "Glassholes" to become a thing. Publicly chatting up your device is still... let's say, socially adventurous.

The AI Pin, priced at a hefty $699 with an additional $24 monthly subscription for unlimited AI use, positions itself as a standalone product and a smartphone alternative.

But are these functions worth the price? I’m not sure. Most of the functions that Humane does, ChatGPT can do too, and for the price of a smartphone this device gets rid of an awful lot of the smartphone features we love - reading emails, watching videos, or FaceTiming.

So, who's this for? Maybe it's for those wanting to ditch their smartphone and actually look up from their screens. But is it a better deal than a smartwatch? Hmm, jury's still out on that one.
