The Writerโ€™s Strike is over, did they fight off the AI threat?

Hello Surfers๐Ÿ„!

The Writers of America made history by being the first to sign a document that protects them from AI taking their jobs. However, AI might strike back.

Hereโ€™s your one minute of AI news for the day:

ONE PIECE OF NEWS

๐Ÿค–The Writerโ€™s Strike is over, did they fight off the AI threat?

Last week, the Writerโ€™s Guild of America made a deal with the studios, ending one of its longest strikes in history. The battle was fought over better compensation by streaming platforms, more opportunity to be on set and guardrails around the use of generative AI.

The big fear was that studio execs might lean on AI to create scripts, then toss them to writers to clean up, all while offering less pay and credit.

Hereโ€™s what they agreed on: AI is not allowed to write or rewrite scripts. If studios do give writers AI-generated stuff, they have to be upfront about it. Writers get to choose whether AI can train on their work, and they also get to use AI if they want to.

At first glance, it's a massive win for writers, beyond blocking AI from replacing them, it forces studios to be transparent around AI use.

BUT! The question remains: Will studios actually be honest about their AI use when asked? Proving AI usage can be pretty tricky, after all.

The fight is not over. Writers managed to sign a deal with their employers but that has no effect on major AI firms. Thereโ€™s nothing stopping AI companies, whether they're in the US or abroad, from scraping writersโ€™ work and churning out scripts (and eventually generating movies). This is a threat looming over both the writers and the studios.

Studios need to embrace AI to stay competitive. Critics point out that the current contract might not fully acknowledge this reality.

Even so, the deal's still a notable win and lights the way for other workers who might be threatened by AI. The writersโ€™ fight sends a clear signal: tackle the problem before it takes a real toll.

You can now use DALL-E 3 for FREE inside Bing Chat.

Banana shaped sofa - created with DALL-E 3

This is a huge deal. DALL-E 3 (released last week by OpenAI) is very impressive and on par with Midjourney and Stable Diffusion. However, you need a paid subscription to use Midjourney, and an expensive computer to use Stable Diffusion.

How is this worth it for Microsoft? I don't know! But anyway, you can use it here: bing.com/create.
