In a landscape once dominated by Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, DALL-E 3's meteoric rise to fame last month sent shockwaves. By bundling it into the $20 ChatGPT subscription, OpenAI effectively outshone its competitors. Now, who's going to pay for Midjourney’s $10, 200-generations-a-month deal or grapple with Stable Diffusion’s demanding cloud computing setup? Exactly.

So What Sets DALL-E 3 Apart?

Forget about prompt and keyword gymnastics. With DALL-E 3, simply articulate your vision—be it a “sunrise over the Himalayas" or a nuanced description—and watch it manifest.

The secret sauce? OpenAI developed a precursor model that accurately describes images. This model then captioned a vast array of images, which became the training data for DALL-E 3.

The image generator can even spit out text in images. No, it's not perfect yet. But here's the kicker— it only learned spelling from the caption of the images. Imagine the potential when they do character-level conditioning.

How can you use DALL-E 3 like a pro?

It’s easy. You don't need to be a prompt wizard to create stunning visuals. You just need a bit of practice.

Start by going to Lexica, a large database of AI generated images, and find some you like. Try copying the prompts and recreating them in ChatGPT. Then play around with different variations and learn what works best.

DALL-E can currently do three aspect ratios: vertical, square and horizontal pictures.

If you’re into fine-tuning, you can further customize DALL-E’s outputs to your liking using ChatGPT’s built in feature: Custom instructions. Click on the three dots in the bottom left corner next to your email address and choose “Custom Instructions”.

Here’s a custom instruction template to use from YouTuber Gilbatree. Just copy-paste it and give it your personal twist. Remember to start a new chat for the custom instructions to take effect.

How can you use DALL-E 3 for free?

No GPT Plus? No worries! You can still play the DALL-E game with custom instructions. Tell GPT 3.5 to generate the images and it will give you descriptions. Then go to bing.com/create to bring it to life—for free!

However, a heads-up: creations via Bing aren’t eligible for commercial use.
