How many do you know of the most popular AI tools?

Hey SurfersπŸ„!

You might think you're up to speed with AI tools, but let's put that to the test. I've got a list of the top ten most-used AI tools, ranked by web traffic. As you read through, keep track of how many you already know. I'll share my own score at the end of the article – let's see how we both stack up!

THE NEWS

πŸ› οΈ The top 10 most visited AI tools

The AI industry spectacularly burst onto the scene in late 2022, and it's been going ballistic ever since. From September 2022 to August 2023 alone, the 50 most popular AI websites racked up a jaw-dropping 24 billion visits.

The AI industry saw an average of 2 billion visits monthly over the past year, with a surge to 3.3 billion in the last 6 months.

And what do we like to do with AI?

Well… apparently chatting. Of the top 50 AI tools, 14 are image generators, and only 8 are chatbots. However it's the 8 chatbots that are stealing the show. These chatbots alone have received an astonishing 19.1 billion visits.

Here's a fun fact: AI seems to be a bit of a guys' thing. A whopping 69.5% of users are male, leaving 30.5% female. But who's leading the AI pack? Let's dive into the top 10.

1. ChatGPT

Topping the charts is OpenAI's ChatGPT. It's the star that sparked the AI frenzy, hitting 100 million monthly users in just two months. Over 10 months, it's attracted 14.6 billion visits - a massive 60% of the industry's total traffic. And, surprisingly: 75% of its users are men.

2. Character AI

In second place, we have Character AI, a chatbot playground with 3.8 billion visits. This AI lets you you converse with any character imaginable – from werewolves to personal trainers, and even famous personalities like ie. Elon Musk. Users can make up their own characters as well. From role play to serious conversations you can do just about anything.

It's not just fun; it's addictive, with users spending an average of 30 minutes per session, 3 times the industry average. This one seems to be more popular among women than ChatGPT, 40% of the traffic comes from female users.

3. QuillBot

I’ve never heard about this AI tool before, although QuillBot has been around since 2017, helping with writing tasks. The bot offers various tools like a paraphraser, a grammar checker, citation generator and more. Based on this I would assume that it is mainly to write academic papers, but 1.1 billion visitors in a year indicate that people find it helpful for many usecases.

Despite the rise of LLM chatbots and somewhat declining traffic, it's holding its own with its first-mover advantage.

4. Midjourney

Midjourney is one of the industry leaders when it comes to generating images. This is the most popular tool that is only accessible through a monthly paid subscription (with a limited free trial).

Since their initial launch, competition popped up left and right, however they still seem to be one step ahead, leaving the world in awe every time they roll out a new version. They're now also venturing into video generation, which is pretty exciting.

5. Hugging Face

Hugging Face is a one stop shop for all open-source AI. It's a hub for sharing machine learning models and datasets. Whether you're a developer or an entrepreneur, Hugging Face is where you want to be.

You can also try many of the models on the site for free if you are okay with waiting or you can pay for the compute and skip the queues.

This site being one of the hottest shows just how much interest there is for developing AI tools.

6. Google Bard

Google's Bard is a letdown compared to ChatGPT. The chatbot could only attract 1% of the total traffic of the industry, which is nothing compared to ChatGPT’s 60%.

Despite receiving an engine upgrade to Gemini Pro at the end of 2023, Bard still only lingers at the GPT3.5 level.

Looking forward, Google might give Bard a leg up with the fancier Gemini Ultra engine and by weaving it more into their other products. But let's be real, it's got a pretty steep hill to climb to catch up with OpenAI's superstar, ChatGPT.

Novel AI? Now, that's a bit of a dark horse in the AI race. It's not grabbing headlines like ChatGPT, but it's definitely carving out its own niche.

It's like a secret playground for storytellers. Whether you're writing your next epic fantasy or just experimenting with short stories, Novel AI is your go-to writing buddy. It's all about helping you with those winding narratives with a bit of AI magic.

Sure, it's not pulling in the massive crowds like some of the big names, but it's got its loyal band of word wizards. And who knows? With a few tweaks and a bit of spotlight, Novel AI could become the next big thing for writers and dreamers.

8. CapCut

If you spend any time scrolling on Tiktok, chances are you’re familiar with CapCut. This video editing tool is a blessing to the digital creators, giving them a huge variety of tools and Templates to work with. And those templates often go viral.

It can match the cuts to the rhythm of your chosen songs, generate subtitles and format texts like a pro.

It's completely free to use, and makes money by offering in-app purchases

9. Janitor AI

Now this is an interesting one, while the most popular chatbots like character.ai shied away from NSFW content, Janitor AI leaned into it. This chatbot offers you the option to create your own characters or chat with a popular one, about… well anything your adult fantasy can handle.

This bot is probably biting into the traffic of the porn industry. It boasts a 48.1 million monthly visitor count, which is staggering.

10. Civitai

Last but not least, Civitai is a treasure trove of open-source AI Art models. From manga to American comic book styles, it's got it all. With a paid subscription you can start generating with them right there and then, without having to know anything about how to install and run these models.

Just a heads-up: the adult content filter is there for a reason!

Out of these ten AI tools, I knew about 7 when I first started digging into this topic. How about you? How many were already on your radar?
