Tech leaders divided on how to regulate, Hey Gen dubs videos instantly

Hello SurfersπŸ„!

How to regulate AI development without over-regulating is the question that keeps lawmakers up at night. I wonder if they've ever typed the question into ChatGPT.

Here’s your one minute of AI news for the day:

ONE PIECE OF NEWS

🌍The race to regulate AI

As AI is booming, lawmakers around the world are scratching their heads, wondering how to best regulate the technology without stifling innovation. The main concerns include:

  • AI’s capability to create and spread misinformation, which could interfere with elections.

  • AI’s ability to replace many of the specialized jobs we have now.

  • The long-term threat of AI surpassing humans.

The US: This week in the US, lawmakers are meeting with big names in AI, like Zuckerberg, Musk, and Altman, to delve deeper into AI and understand their views.

While lawmakers study the issue, the White House is urging top tech companies to voluntarily be transparent about their system capabilities and to label AI-generated content. Big players like Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, and OpenAI have already taken the pledge.

The EU: On the flip side, the EU has drafted laws focusing on privacy and intellectual property, but tech companies aren’t thrilled. The EU wants AI creators to be accountable for their tech, even if others have integrated it into a different system, and to pay compensation for training data used.

However, the major AI players are based outside the EU. So, the EU's rules might not shift the global AI landscape much.

China: China is setting rules for AI to reflect the β€œcore values of socialism.” And if an AI product might sway public opinion? It’s gotta get a security check. However, they're allowing for relatively free development in private settings and business-specific areas.

As companies rush to launch products, lawmakers around the world are hard-pressed to come up with regulation to both protect society and seize the opportunities presented by the AI revolution. With the US election happening next year, and employers rapidly adopting AI, the clock is ticking.
