๐OpenAI is racing to beat Google
Microsoft AI Researchers accidentally publish terabytes of data
Hello Surfers๐!
The clash between Google and OpenAI might be the most significant AI thing to happen this autumn, and the best thing about it is that the clear winners will be us, the users.
Hereโs your one minute of AI news for the day:
ONE PIECE OF NEWS
๐ฉOpenAI is racing to beat Google in launching the next generation of LLMs.
In the world of artificial intelligence, the next frontier isn't just about chat. It's about chatbots that can see, understand, and interpret images. Right now, two giants are locking horns to be the first to perfect this technology: OpenAI and Google.
Google, who has been playing catch up with OpenAI and Microsoft, is on the cusp of potentially turning the tables. Their multi-modal chatbot, Gemini AI, is nearing its beta launch.
Whatโs the fuss about?
Imagine an AI that doesn't just hear you โ but it can see as well.
When OpenAIโs GPT-4 launched in March, it was touted as multi-modal. Soon after that a select few got a taste of its capabilities through Bing and the results were incredible:
Bing giving advice on computer assembly:
Bing giving food ideas based on whatโs in the fridge:
Bing identifying a medical picture:
And trying to diagnose potential health issue:
BUT! OpenAI hit the brakes on releasing the function, also known as GPT-Vision. The reason: It can easily solve Captchas and facial recognition, posing serious security risks.
This hiccup could be Google's golden ticket. If their Gemini AI has navigated these challenges, the ball's in OpenAI's court to catch up.
Rumor has it that in the meantime OpenAI is already gearing up for its next move: a new model named Gobi. Unlike its predecessors, Gobi is intended to be multi-modal from inception. But it's still in the conceptual phase, with training yet to commence.
As both tech giants advance, itโs clear that the race to redefine how we interact with AI is heating up. And the world is eagerly watching.
ONE IDEA
I think this graph from our new paper is very consequential. It shows working with AI boosts low performers up well above average. And ours isnโt the only paper to find this.
What does it mean when everyone becomes pretty good? We are going to find out. oneusefulthing.org/p/centaurs-andโฆ
