π Microsoft gets a board seat at OpenAI
Google Deepmind AI just invented 380,000 new materials
Hello Surfersπ!
Happy 1st birthday to ChatGPT! Time to break out the party hats and piΓ±ata. Can you believe it's only been a year? Generative AI has gone from 'what's that?' to 'it's everywhere' β itβs in search engines, rewriting our emails, and dollying up our LinkedIn profile pictures. And itβs still the early days.
Researchers say that by 2024, more than 100 million people in the U.S. will be using generative AI. Pretty wild, right?
Hereβs whatβs going on in the world of AI today:
THE NEWS
πSam Altman is officially back and Microsoft gets a board seat at OpenAI
Sam Altman officially made his comeback to OpenAI with a memo to the team yesterday.
He confirmed that the board's getting a refresh, with some notable names: former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo, and ex-Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor, with Taylor taking the chair.
There's been a ton of gossip about why Altman was previously ousted. Some thought it was about disagreements over an AI project, Q*, but former board member Helen Toner clarified on X that it wasnβt about AI safety.
To be clear: our decision was about the board's ability to effectively supervise the company, which was our role and responsibility. Though there has been speculation, we were not motivated by a desire to slow down OpenAIβs work.

The biggest question is: What will happen to Ilya Sutskever? The Chief Scientist of OpenAI was on the board that fired Altman. But then, plot twist, Ilya changed his mind when the staff almost revolted to get Altman back.
Altman wrote that he has no hard feelings towards Ilya, and they are discussing how he can continue his work at OpenAI. However, it's clear that Sutskever won't be rejoining the board.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's stepping in, kind of like a silent partner. They will be on the board, but as a non-voting observer. After Altman's surprise exit, Microsoft's big boss, Satya Nadella, was like, 'No more surprises, please.'
They might not have a vote, but having Microsoft in the room? That's gonna leave a mark.
The board's new agenda includes bringing in fresh faces to mix up the perspectives, and conducting an independent review of the recent events.
It's a situation to watch closely.
ONE MORE THING
Google Deepmind AI just invented 380,000 new materials
Google's AI just revolutionized material science by diving into a digital library of 150,000 known materials and whipping up 2.2 million new combos. Out of these, it figured that 380,000 could actually be stable.
This is a big shift from the old ways of discovering materials, which often played it safe, sticking to what we already knew. These traditional methods were kind of limited, leaning heavily on familiar structures due to the collective knowledge we've built up over the years.
But here's the cool part about AI: it doesn't get bogged down by the same old thinking. It's all about exploring super complex and totally fresh combinations of materials, stuff we humans might not even consider.
These new materials could be game-changers for stuff like batteries and superconductors. The big task now? Actually making them in the lab.
