๐Ÿ„GPT-4 Vision first impressions

GPT-4 Vision is rolling out for many European users

Hello Surfers๐Ÿ„!

OpenAI is rolling out GPT-4Vision for a lot of users (especially in Europe) and I gotta say, itโ€™s a bit of a bumpy ride. They rolled it out to me last morning, then went "Oops! Just kidding" and took it away. Weirdly I can still use it in previous chats where I gave it a try. Many users reported similar problems and glitches. But hey, let's dive into my initial takeaways.

Hereโ€™s your one minute of AI news for the day:

ONE PIECE OF NEWS

๐Ÿ‘๏ธGPT-4 Vision is here to change the way we do things

Hold onto your circuits; thereโ€™s been a lot of buzz around the new Vision function lately! And rightly so, we're diving headfirst into the multi-modal model era, a.k.a. LMMs. It's like tech's hitting puberty - machines aren't just understanding words, but sounds, images, and soon video and other sensory goodies (like temp, pressure, you name it). This opens a Pandora's box of killer uses.

Snap a pic of a random screw and your toolbox. AI's got your back, pointing out the exact screwdriver you need. Neat, huh?

However, thatโ€™s just scratching the surface. I threw a bunch of personal curveballs its way:

Blood test result: I threw a relative's results its way. If you're anything like me, decoding those results feels like deciphering alien lingo. Numbers everywhere, some too high, some too low, and doctors? Too busy to translate every bit.

Enter ChatGPT. While there were a few slip-ups (like mixing up the neutrophil count range), it broke down the results into easy to digest information and correctly identified a problem with kidney function and inflammation. While it's no MD, and it'll be the first to tell you to see an actual doc; itโ€™s a game-changer for us mere mortals trying to get a grip on our health data.

Technical support: Ditch those chunky manuals and wave goodbye to endless forum-scrolling! Just flashed the sticker on my TV's back to ChatGPT, and voila! It briefed me on USB-stick formatting and the video formats my TV's cool with. No more tech-guesswork, folks!

Facebook ad for renting out an apartment: I took a snap of my apartment, and ChatGPT became my instant realtor! It called it โ€œcozy and well-lit, showcasing a modern designโ€ and highlighted that it is โ€œideal for singles or couples looking for a chic urban retreat.โ€ Adding these features on top:

๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ Comfortable living and dining area ๐Ÿ’ก Modern hanging light fixtures ๐Ÿ“š Built-in shelves for book lovers ๐Ÿงณ Ample storage space

Finding Waldo: Gave GPT a classic 'Find Waldo' pic and, boom, instant success! But my inner doubter went, "Hold up! Aren't these Waldo images super famous? It's probably seen 'em before." So, got crafty. I made Dall-E 3 generate a new scene and placed Waldo in with Photoshop.

And guess what? ChatGPT was all, "Start at the top left shoreline, and bam! There's Waldo before halfway!" Mind. Blown. But here's the plot twist: I put Waldo in the water in my next attempt, and ChatGPT was stumped! Guess even top-notch AI can lose Waldo in deep waters.

My opinion: We're literally surfing on the edge of tomorrow with this. Overall, I think this is some next-level, space-age tool we've got here. It will fundamentally change how we interact with the world and search for information. Who's going to Google things or FaceTime their dad anymore?

Researchers were able to read words from a burned papyrus scroll with AI

University of Kentucky challenged computer scientists to reveal contents of carbonised papyrus burned by lava after the Vesuvius erupted in AD79. Itโ€™s a โ€˜potential treasure trove for historiansโ€™ but unrolling them manually would destroy them. Thus, researchers are relying on 3D X-ray imaging and AI. The first word deciphered is โ€œpurpleโ€, but historians hope there will be new plays of Sophocles, poems of Sappho or business letters hidden in the scrolls.
