Happy Friday Surfers🏄!

In recent years Microsoft laid off many of its journalists at Microsoft News and MSN to replace them with artificial intelligence.

Last week, the plan backfired when AI invented a brand new form of disaster tourism by recommending a visit to the Food Bank as part of a travel article about Ottawa and suggesting that visitors “consider going into it on an empty stomach.”

Here’s your one minute of AI news:

ONE PIECE OF NEWS

🔍Even AI couldn’t help Microsoft Bing gain market share against Google

When Microsoft launched Bing’s AI features, it hoped to chip away some of Google’s market share estimating 2 billion in additional revenue after every percent gained. However, six months after the launch, Bing's market share remains unchanged at 3%, even as Microsoft touts its success.

In hindsight, the big mistake Microsoft made at the launch was that Bing Chat was only available for people who logged in with a Microsoft ID on Microsoft’s Edge browser, which is used by less than 10% of the population.

But the main culprit for the less than enthusiastic reception might be OpenAI's ChatGPT, which employs the same chat technology as Bing and has overshadowed the search engine, attracting over 233 million users since its launch last November compared to Bing’s less than 100 million.

However Microsoft has a more important area to focus on: its popular workplace products like Word, Outlook and Excel. Getting AI features right for these products will be crucial for the tech giant’s future.

ONE IDEA

When we don't like what AI is doing, we call it 'hallucination'. But when we do, we label it 'creativity'.
