πŸ„Amazon, Robots & Open-source

GPT-4 level open source AI, Robots avoiding collision, Amazon AI ready to change shopping,

Hey SurfersπŸ„!

If you're team robots, you'll be glad to know they're getting really good at navigating the real world. But, don't expect humanoid robots to be in our homes anytime soon – that's probably still a good 7 to 10 years away. However, maybe our robot vacuum cleaners will learn a thing or two from these new skills and start being useful.

Here’s what’s going on in AI:

THE NEWS

πŸš€ GPT-4 level open-source AI leak

There's quite a buzz in the world of open source AI right now, after a mysterious developer uploaded a new large language model "miqu-1-70b" to HuggingFace. (The site where the AI nerds hang out and share models.) After some testing it seems like this model is almost as good as OpenAI's GPT-4 on a popular benchmark and better than Mistral, the current champ of open-source.

The mysterious uploader didn’t share much about the project, but there were some suspicious similarities to Mistral. Some speculated that miqu could mean Mistral Quantized. Quantization is a method that makes it possible to run AI models on less powerful computers and chips.

The plot thickened when Arthur Mensch, the CEO of Mistral, chimed in. He admitted that what we're seeing is actually an older model that one of their clients accidentally let out of the bag.

And get this – it's not even the latest and greatest they have up their sleeve. This little leak is a big deal in the AI world. If an open-source model can get to the level of GPT-4, before Google does, it will be a huge win for the community. It's a clear sign that the open source gang is catching up fast.

It will also put pressure on OpenAI to release a newer model, or else the companies using its GPT-4 model to run their apps might turn to a free solution instead.

πŸ‘— Amazon’s AI can dress you up

Amazon is taking a page out of Alibaba's book to revolutionize online shopping. Their new AI tech lets you try on any clothes instantly.

But it's not just about playing dress-up with your photos. This AI doubles as an interior designer, effortlessly swapping out furniture in your living room pics. Now, you can reinvent your style or living space from the comfort of your home. No more squinting to imagine how that IKEA coffee table would look in front of your couch.

I'm on the fence about this. While I'm not a fan of shopping and might actually enjoy using these tech solutions, I can't help but notice a trend: it seems like every new invention is just another way to keep us at home.

ONE MORE THING

πŸ€– Robots can now both run fast and avoid crashes

In the world of robotics, a new breakthrough named Agile But Safe (ABS) is making waves. This innovative approach allows robot dogs to move quickly (agile) and safely avoid obstacles, a task that has long posed a challenge.

Previously, robots were either too slow to be efficient or fast but prone to accidents. ABS changes the game by teaching robots two crucial skills: swift navigation and quick reaction to potential crashes.

This training occurs in a simulated environment and once mastered, these skills enable the robots to maneuver in real-world scenarios, be it in homes or parks, without crashing into anything.
