ONE PIECE OF NEWS

πŸ”ŽThe AI elephant in the classroom

Summer break is coming to an end in the Northern Hemisphere, and as students return to the classroom, educators are faced with a burning question: What should we do about AI?

Several schools around the globe have banned AI applications, adding them to their internet network blocklists. However, schools will eventually have to face the reality that AI is becoming an essential tool for both work and everyday life.

In a recent survey of 500 U.S.-based developers working at enterprise companies, 92% said they were already using AI coding tools, and 70% stated that these tools gave them a competitive advantage at work.

To stay relevant, schools should focus on teaching the necessary skills. OpenAI released a blog post yesterday with suggestions and prompts for educators:

DO:

  • Use ChatGPT as a stand-in for a debate partner or a recruiter in a job interview.

  • Create quizzes.

  • Teach critical thinking by debating the answers provided by ChatGPT.

DON'T:

  • Check for AI-generated text in student essays, as there are no reliable tools available.

The challenge for both students and educators will be learning to use this technology to solve complex problems.

AI can complement research efforts, helping students quickly grasp new topics, which will make them more productive and analytical. Providing them with time to exchange ideas, and foster discussion.

One thing is for sure, rejecting AI tools, will not serve the students long term.
